Insular Region Tropical paradise of Colombia
Colombia is
divided into regions by factors such as relief, distance to the sea, soil
conditions and other characteristics. In this report we will present some data
of the insular region, which despite of being the smallest on its surface, it is a
very diverse region, since it is made up of islands in the two oceans. Tourism is its main income base.
The
insular region of Colombia is the sixth natural region in which the Colombian
territory is divided. It is the smallest of all the regions and includes all
the areas outside the continental territories of the Republic of Colombia. The
portion of the insular region of Colombia corresponding to the Caribbean is
formed by the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. On the
Pacific side, it is composed by the Malpelo and Gorgona islands. Similarly, on
both coasts there are other groups of smaller keys and banks.
Archipelago of
San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina: These islands make up the
department of the same name. The archipelago is located in the Caribbean Sea.
Gorgona Island:
It is a small system of islands conformed by Gorgona, Gorgonilla and other
three islets. They are located in the Pacific Ocean and belong to the
department of Cauca. There is the Gorgona Island National Natural Park that was
previously used as a maximum security prison for highly dangerous criminals.
Malpelo: This
islet is of volcanic formation. It is located in the Pacific Ocean and is under
the circumscription of the department of Valle del Cauca.
The archipelago
of San Bernardo is made up of a group of 10 islands located in the Caribbean
Sea. They are located in the Gulf of Morrosquillo.
The legends of the insular region of Colombia manifest
themselves in different ways. Most of these beliefs are based on mysterious
things and beings. Some of them are: Rolling Calf, Duppy, Buoca and the best
known is the legend of the treasure of the pirate Morgan.
In all its culture and history we have the parties that are lit with the music of reggae, calypso, soca and island waltz. As a tourist attraction for own and visitors there are the patron saint festivities of the island of Providence in homage to the iguana that is on the way to extinction; There are also Caribbean Evening which are concerts and typical dances for cultural integration, among others, they celebrate the patron saint festivities of San Andrés, the coconut festival, the day of the race and the best known Green Moon, which is a cultural festival dedicated to the African customs of the islands, their history and how the San Andresana culture was created.
The gastronomy does not stop being present and they celebrate the festival of the crab that is based on this animal and they also prepare special recipies with rice, snacks, cakes, among others, also it is accompanied by music and dances. The most famous dish is the Rondón.
From all our experience in studying the insular region we can make some conclusions:
🐳The islands have an incalculable wealth that comes from their location, their culture and history, the biological variety of their environment and the beauty and environmental quality of most of their land and the sea that surrounds them, but at the same time, there are serious problems that must be solved as soon as possible if we want to avoid changing the vision of paradise on the islands, because economic, social and government attention are lacking.
🐳The insular region presents certain problems that affect not only the ecosystem but also all the people who live on the islands, one of the main ones is the contamination of water, which is why we should reinforce environmental awareness in the communities and emphasize the importance of caring for the environment that surrounds them.
🐳Overpopulation is increasingly evident and continues to generate many social problems due to the fact that people remain illegally in their territories and this increases the lack of employment opportunities for native people.
🐳More programs should be designed and executed by the government in order to allow the rational use of the resources of the insular region to be implemented, thus allowing the conservation of ecosystems rich in natural species. The fauna of the islands is permanently threatened by exploitation or indiscriminate fishing, without taking into account that there are many species in danger of extinction.
🐳The undisputed beauty and natural exuberance of the insular region of our country attracts the interest of people to come and visit their territories, and with tourism and trade as sources of progress, it is essential to improve the conditions of connectivity, infrastructure and services that result in benefit of the entire community.
